Have you been avoiding wearing hearing aids?

"by " Albert Stein

If you are experiencing a medical problem, it makes sense to seek treatment that is available to you. However, for a number of people living with hearing loss, the idea of wearing hearing aids is one they resist.

The reasons behind the hesitation to treat an impairment with a hearing device can vary from one person to another, but is vital to realise that your hearing health is far more important than any old fashioned stigmas. Let's take a look at some of the reasons why people might avoid hearing aids.

According to the Hearing Care Industry Association, only one in four of the people who could benefit from a hearing aid actually use one* – a sobering statistic.

Perhaps one of the reasons why people may balk at the idea of being fitted with hearing aids is due to the image of hearing devices in decades past. Fortunately, these bulky hearing aids have been replaced with smaller, less conspicuous designs, thanks to advances in modern technology. In fact, there are some hearing aids that are practically undetectable to the average passerby.

Another potential cause for hesitance surrounding seeking treatment for hearing loss is a sense of embarrassment. This is thought to stem from the idea that hearing aids represent a condition most commonly associated with the elderly – meaning that hearing aids could potentially 'age' the wearer.

However, this is a potentially dangerous mindset, with the Scripps Research Institute explaining that hearing loss when left untreated can worsen*, making it crucial to address hearing loss sooner rather than later.
