Could meditation help people to manage their tinnitus?

"by " Albert Stein

A condition characterised by an internal ringing in the ears, tinnitus is estimated to affect one in seven people around the world*. However, as there can be many different causes for the condition not everyone will experience it the same way.

Some may hear the humming, ringing or buzzing sound consistently throughout the day, whilst others may find their symptoms fluctuate in intensity. Frequently, tinnitus sufferers are more likely to notice the noise in quiet environments, meaning that they can have trouble getting to sleep at night.

Fortunately, there are various treatments available to help make tinnitus more manageable. Some you will be able to find at your local Audika clinic, such as tinnitus-specific hearing devices, but there is another approach you can try from the comfort of your own home.

Your mental and emotional state can have a considerable affect on the potency of tinnitus, as symptoms can be aggravated by stress. However, research also suggests that calming your mind could also help to calm the ringing.

A study published in the Hearing Journal describes Mindfulness-Based Tinnitus Reduction (MBTR) as a way of helping tinnitus sufferers gain a new perspective of their condition*. Instead of trying to deflect any negative thoughts about their symptoms, MBTR encourages people to meditate on them instead*.

It is believed that by adopting a non-judgmental approach to tinnitus, and accepting the condition, people can begin to come to terms with their tinnitus and reduce any related distress, according to the British Tinnitus Association*.
